WHO Issues Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than one in 10 individuals that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it issues its initial guidance on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to widespread availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, explains the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Despite the present most optimistic case, the production of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The guideline encourages nations and manufacturers to increase access, through approaches such as voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Injections Function

These medications imitate a natural hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so individuals reduce food intake.

Individuals typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Studies suggests patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the medication, because their typical hunger resume.

Being above a healthy weight increases your risk for experiencing health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight impacts people in every country and was responsible for millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
