The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
